Regret
April 24, 2026
I roam the barren rooms of lost dreams,
a ghost, in search of all that should have been.
I find there only things as they are.
Unwanted demons
unworthy of a thought,
they glare at me from the darkness.
Refusing to be ignored,
they devour me with hungry eyes,
flawed offspring
begging for a loving touch.
Acceptance.
I have none to give,
for my grief blinds me,
a shroud pulled tight.
I steer past them
lurching into empty spaces
where my longings once lived
and flourished,
searching in vain
for all that I hoped would be,
still only finding things as they are.

Susan Speranza is the author of the award-winning novel, Ice Out, The Tale of Lucia Grandi, the Early Years, and the prose poem, The City of Light. She has had poems published in The Magnolia Review, Poetry Quarterly, The Voices Project, The Feminist Voice. When she is not writing, she is breeding and exhibiting her champion Pekingese and together they make their home in the mountains of Vermont.
