I Stepped Inside the Forest

October 3, 2026
I carried a candle just in case I could not find my way the woods were thick and dark as I followed a winding path Searching for bits of nature twisty twigs, a lost feather perhaps bark or a pine cone— makings to inspire collage Earthy smell of soggy leaves cushioned my footsteps I noticed up ahead beneath a tree a mound of golden hay. Is it the habitat of a creature seeking shelter, a place to stay? I didn’t disturb the nest unsure an animal might be near. Daylight glowed through leaves where I never imagined to find it branches weaved and curved inviting rays of sunlight behind it. I laughed at the candle in my hand the book of matches too I found light where least expected felt safe and well protected.
