The Absence of Someone Who Was Never There
April 22, 2026
You realise you are alone
when you begin to miss someone you never had.
In everything you do, wherever you go,
they say you are never truly alone —
but they do not feel this emptiness.
I look down from my window
at a city that breathes beauty,
and I watch lives passing by:
hands held, shared laughter, whispered promises.
And I, in the midst of it all,
find only silence.
What is the use of having the world
if there is no one to love us?
I will return —
and I will have to begin again.
Perhaps one day I will learn to fly
until I find someone
who recognises me.

Beautifully written. Poetry that gives voice to a universal loneliness.

I loved this as the poem shows an awareness of 'lost love' but the courage to recognise it for what it was and to have the inner strength to move on

Beautifully written. Am sure it must resonate with a lot of people especially those who lived through wartime.
